Top Reasons to Visit a Optometrist

When it comes to their well being, many people tend to overlook their eyes, often ignoring signs that something may be wrong. It is important to visit an optometrist at least once a year to get a comprehensive eye check to ensure that the eyes are performing optimally.

Optometrists are eye experts who diagnose and treat conditions of the eye; additionally, a lesser-known fact is that they also help to diagnose other serious conditions, such as blood pressure and diabetes, simply by examining the eyes. People may not be aware that they are suffering from such conditions, and when they opt for an eye exam, their optometrist can point out warning signals. Blood pressure and diabetes can cause visible changes to the vessels of the eye that an average person would not be able to see. Here are some additional reasons to visit an optometrist:

Developing vision in young children

With the rise of technological devices, children are more and more susceptible to eye conditions. Dry eyes and impaired vision (myopia) are becoming increasingly common and un-diagnosed. Children should have their eyes regularly checked for these conditions so that appropriate treatment can begin.

Vision in the ageing population

Once a person is over 40, they need to increase the frequency of their visits to the optometrist. This is because conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and cataracts are more prevalent in this population and the need to be treated promptly.

Vision problems from lifestyle factors

People who work long hours in a desk job looking at a computer screen are most likely putting too much strain on their eyes. They tend to ignore signs such as dry eyes, blurry vision and headaches that can be treated by an optometrist. Optometrists will be able to provide options, such as prescription lenses, to reduce strain on the eye and improve these symptoms.

Vision screenings cannot take the place of an eye exam

Passing a simple vision test at a motor vehicle department for adults or at school for children does not mean that the eyes are working optimally. Only a comprehensive eye exam can detect signs of eye problems such as glaucoma.

Eye exams should be scheduled just as GP appointments are scheduled regularly. Without proper vision, the world can become a very difficult place to navigate, hence it is vital that everything is done to ensure that eye health is optimal.
